What Is Pay It Forward all about?

What is Pay It Forward all about?

You may or may not be familiar with the Pay It Forward

Movie from 2000, or the book that inspired the movie

written by Catherine Ryan Hyde. But you certainly will

want to learn what it's all about now. Pay It Forward,

although a unique concept, it certainly is not a new one

by any stretch of the imagination. Pay It Forward entails

having a deed, a favor, or a debt, paid forward to someone

else who is deserving, vs returning it to the person whom the

deed, favor, or debt is owed.

Paying It Forward from the past, by Jennifer Kelly:

This unique concept that was written by Hyde was not her

idea. It dates back centuries, the first of which was by

Benjamin Franklin in a letter written in 1784.

I do not pretend to give such a sum; I only lend it to you.

When you (...) meet with another honest Man in Similar

Distress, you must Pay Me by lending this Sum to him;

enjoying him to discharge the Debt by like operation,

when he shall be able, and shall meet with an opportunity.”

This same concept was referred to in Robert A. Heinlien's

book Between Planets (1951); for this he is largely credited

for coining the phrase. In the story money is lent by a banker

to a character by the name of Don. He then states “I'll pay it

back, first chance.” The banker responds, “Instead, Pay it

forward to some other brother who needs it.”

In 2006 Oprah Winfrey used the Pay It Forward concept

by giving each member of the audience that day $1000

and a camcorder. Their instructions were to record how

they used the money for random acts of kindness in a

Pay It Forward Challenge.

What can you do with this concept in your own community?

What does all of this mean for you? The act of paying it

forward is more than a book or a movie. In the end, it's about

being nice. Being nice is trait that can be inherited, learned,

or practiced daily. Because the act of being nice can, and will

bring you rewards beyond your comprehension.

By now we should have all learned that there are spiritual

rewards regarding the act of being nice, but also there is

significance in your health benefits as well. More than that,

it gives us a feeling of happiness when we know we've done

something good for another. This feeling cannot be matched

or sustained by the accumulation of any material possession;

it comes solely from the free act of goodwill and love.

At the end of your life, will you reflect upon the number of

dollars you accrued, or the number of lives you touched?

Will you be remembered as a person who kept score, or paid

it forward?

Take time learn about the Pay It Forward challenge.
